Classes
Note: For any person to use the amateur “ham” radio frequencies, the Federal Communication Commission requires that that person must be a licensed amateur radio operator. In amateur radio, there are three levels of licenses with increasing levels of privileges…and responsibilities. The levels are Technician, General and Amateur Extra.
Technician Class
The Frank Warren Instructor Group, under the sponsorship of the Caravan Club, offered a Technician Licensing Class in May of 2025. That class attracted a dozen students with 11 of them completing the class and 9 passing the examination. At this time there are no plans to offer another Technician class during 2026, but that may change. If you are interested in obtaining your Technician license please send an email to head instructor Larry Goga at AE5CZ@arrl.net asking to be put on the list for their next Technician class.
General Class
The Frank Warren Instructor Group, under the sponsorship of the Caravan Club, offered a General Licensing Class in November of 2025. That class attracted 8 students with all of them completing the class and passing the examination. At this time there are no plans to offer another General class during 2026, but that may change. If you are interested in obtaining your General license please send an email to head instructor Larry Goga at AE5CZ@arrl.net asking to be put on the list for their next General class.
Amateur EXTRA Class
As of the middle of March, 2026, the Amateur Radio Caravan Club and the Frank Warren Instructor Group have embarked on the project of putting together an Amateur Radio EXTRA class for some time later this year. Right now, there are over a dozen General class license holders who have expressed an interest in upgrading their “ticket” to this highest level. The dates are October 10thand 11th and then October 17th and 18th of 2026 and they have reserved the Clubhouse of the Vineyards 55+ Mobile Home Community at 6118 Edith Blvd NE in Albuquerque.
If you would like to enroll in this class please contact Larry Goga, AE5CZ at AE5CZ@arrl.net or give him a phone call at his home phone number (1-505-293-5866, please leave a message). More information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
If other local groups teaching licensing classes are out there, we’d like to list them here. Please contact Pete Stine, webmaster, at nmstine@gmail.com .
